Favourite Visual Facilitation Books
If you’re a graphic recorder, graphic facilitator, a sketchnoter or just curious about the world of visual practice – here’s a list of favourite books that have helped Drawing Change graphic recorders on their creative journeys. There’s some foundational visual practice books and not-so-usual ones that have personally inspired us to think with our pens.

Graphic Recording / Graphic Facilitation

50 authors from truly all around the world – The World of Visual Facilitation is now available! I have two chapters in this hefty, full colour book.

Drawn Together Through Visual Practice – an anthology of 27 voices from the field of visual practice. Edited by Brandy Agerbeck, Kelvy Bird, Sam Bradd and Jennifer Shepherd
Graphic facilitator Brandy Agerbeck, whose gift at explaining things clearly and concisely, shines in this book about visual practice called “The Idea Shapers”. Brandy’s first book, the classic Graphic Facilitator’s Guide, was one of the first books that turned me into a graphic facilitator.

Kelvy Bird’s way of scribing, Generative Scribing, and her books are gifts to the field. This book describes “key concepts that inform and cultivate a scribe’s inner capacities of being, joining, perceiving, knowing, and drawing.”

The Doodle Revolution – Unlock the Power To Think Differently – Sunni Brown. More than drawing, Sunni facilitates multi-sensory facilitation experiences.
Sketchnoting

The Art of Visual Notetaking is a new offering from Emily Mills – if you’re interested in sketchnoting, this is a great place to start.

The Sketchnote Handbook: the illustrated guide to visual note taking – by Mike Rhode

Dan’s written five bestselling books on business-visualization, including Draw To Win and Back of the Napkin.

Draw Stronger by Kriota Willberg is a great illustrated book about doing exercises for drawing artists, so you can keep drawing for a long time.
Facilitation

The Front of The Room: a book on facilitation by experienced facilitators – by Dan Newman, who often works with scribes/ graphic recorders / knowledge workers in an integrated way

Better online meetings! Graphic facilitator Brian Tarallo’s book Surviving the Horror of Online Meetings: How to Facilitate Good Virtual Meetings & Manage Meeting Monster

I think I’ve bought 8 copies of adrienne maree brown’s book Emergent Strategy to give away so far. It’s about complexity, radical self-love, and community in your facilitation, with a sprinkling of science fiction/futurism.
