Data for Resilient Global Food and Agriculture Systems – GODAN

What data governance frameworks do we need for food and agriculture?

"The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations commissioned GODAN (Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition) to conduct a detailed study in 2022, exploring this topic, and asking: As emerging technologies radically disrupt all aspects of food and agriculture, how do we enable legal frameworks to meet this accelerated pace of innovation while leaving no one behind?"

New Report on Data Governance, Justice and Agriculture

Data-driven agriculture is rapidly changing the world, and could help us address global food insecurity. But who owns that data, and how is it governed? There is a call for inclusive governance mechanisms for agriculture data, so no one gets left behind. An online panel presentation focussed on a new report by GODAN (Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition), Ownership, Control, and Governance of the Benefits of Data for Food and Agriculture (PDF).

The GODAN report has four key findings:

  1. The context, players, and emerging concerns surrounding global norms and policies governing digital resources for food and agriculture
  2.  An outline of existing legal frameworks for data ownership
  3. A conceptual framework for engagement with data management and governance balancing the FAIR and CARE principles
  4. Steps forward

Graphic recording a webinar to present the report and key findings

The report authors held a webinar to help share findings and engage a wide community in discussing some of the issues raised by the report. I visualized the panel discussion in real time with live graphic facilitation, using technology and a tablet online. The graphics were part of the engagement plan for the webinar and participants could see the image in progress and completed at the end of the 90-minute session.

The panelists and authors were:

Prof. Jeremy de Beer – Professor, Faculty of Law, and Director, Open AIR, at the Centre for Law, Technology, and Society, University of Ottawa

Dr. Chidi Oguamanam – Professor, Faculty of Law, Research Chair in Bio-Innovation, Indigenous Knowledge Systems and Global Knowledge Governance, University of Ottawa

Dr. Éliane Ubalijoro – Executive Director, Sustainability in the Digital Age; Global Hub Director, Future Earth Canada

Multiple uses for the images afterwards – a built in communications strategy

Graphic recording visuals can have a long life after a webinar – and can be a pillar of your communications strategy overall. These graphics help illustrate the report online, and emphasize key messages. and online communications strategy to help emphasize key messages.  These visuals, along with a clearly written website, an Analysis Brief, help communicate the findings of the full report in a way that is easy for people to digest the information, engage them, and invite them to click and learn more.
