Honouring loved ones at the Highway of Tears 20th Anniversary Symposium

In April 2026, families, community members, Indigenous leaders, advocates and supporters gathered in Prince George, B.C., to mark the 20th anniversary of the Highway of Tears Symposium. The gathering commemorated the original 2006 symposium and renewed attention to the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, girls, Two Spirit, transgender and gender-diverse+ (MMIWG2S+) peoples.

The anniversary event, convened by Carrier Sekani Family Services, was an opportunity to remember the loved ones whose families have carried their loss, unanswered questions and calls for justice for decades. It was also an opportunity to update the original 33 recommendations to prevent further violence, and to unveil a new artistic monument called the Pillar of Hope at Cottonwood Island Park.
