FUNdamentals of Calligraphy: Romans and Italic Sharon Zeugin
Learn the fundamentals of calligraphy and how to use your lettering more effectively in sketch notes and graphic recording. Specifically, participants will learn the logic, proportions and spacing of majestic Roman Capitals and their lowercase counterparts. Students will be shown how to create the letterforms with monoline, brush and broad edge tools. They will also learn how to modify the forms for a more contemporary look; and they will learn to create contemporary decorated letters to use to add “gravitas” to graphic recordings.

In addition to the Roman forms, students will learn the fundamentals of an informal Italic lettering. Here, we will explore rhythm and pattern as it relates to the lettering, and also the optimal way to use this script in sketch notes and graphic recordings. For both lettering styles, hands on exercises will be emphasized, and supplemented by many demonstrations from the instructor. The goal will be to create a small “custom map” on any topic using the letterforms learned.

Students will receive a special booklet with exemplars and practice approach tips and samples that illustrate how Sharon uses these letter forms in sketch notes and graphic recordings.
