Drawing Agroforestry – graphic recording at UBC Farm

graphic recording ubc farm vancouver sustainability agroforestry workshopOne very early Saturday morning, I packed up my graphic recording supplies, my bike and bus pass and adventured to the UBC Farm for a workshop about Agroforestry. Agroforestry is a sustainable method of farming that brings together crops (food), forestry, and livestock (animals).

As a graphic recorder, I was there to help visualize different parts of agroforestry including farming finances, marketing, and different practices. I learned that agroforestry has been used for centuries – and it can pair up unique crops, trees and animals that make sense in a local context.

One of the great things about graphic recording is that it works with the needs of the group.

I drew this graphic recording during a morning session with two guest speakers and small group work. During the guest speakers, I stand at the drawing wall. When the participants break into small group work, I walk around taking small notes and listening. I bring the information back to the poster and use this detailed information to help me synthesize the main topics. Usually after small group work, the different tables ‘report back’ to the larger room, and then I harvest the main ideas and connect the dots.

Graphic recording is flexible – and bringing visuals into the room supports new ways of learning. Thanks to Kate and Christopher for a fantastic session.
