Last night, an informal bunch of letterpress people gathered for drinks and conversation at Rhizome Cafe.
So far, we are a varied bunch: 2 graphic designers, a commercial printer, a book artist/curator, a bookbinder, an illustrator, and many letterpress printers. Some people have been in their industry for decades and others are starting on the path of printing.
We’re interested in networking to exchange ideas and skills, purchase supplies together, and pass on letterpress resources. And of course, show and tells. It’s a very informal network right now.
The next meetup is planned for October, which is right in time for the bi-annual Vancouver Wayzgoose printing fair and other events at the Vancouver Public Library.
In October, we’ll decide on our name. Keeping it simple, we might go with Vancouver Press Gang, which follows in the tradition of the Halifax Press Gang, Ottawa Press Gang. But this is not to be confused with the excellent, but now defunct, feminist printing collective Press Gang Publishers.
Three of us will also visit the inaugural W2 letterpress meeting Thursday night, and will report back details about the letterpress plans at that location.
Email me at sambradd.designs at gmail.com if you would like to join our informal ‘gang’ in October.
* UPDATE *: We’re not using Press Gang, out of respect for Press Gang Publishers. We’re thinking “Vancouver Letterpress League”. Yay? Nay? See you in October!
